What not to touch
A garage door can weigh a few hundred pounds, and the springs carry most of that weight. While you wait:
- Don’t loosen, unwind or remove a spring or the cables tied to it. They hold enough tension to cause serious injury.
- Stop using the opener if a spring or cable broke. The motor can strain, burn out, or pull the door down crooked.
- Keep children and pets away, and don’t stand or walk under a door that is stuck partway or hanging crooked.
- Only pull the red emergency release with the door fully closed or someone holding it, or a door with a broken spring can drop fast.

How do I know if my garage door spring broke?
Most people hear a loud bang from the garage. Then the door feels very heavy, opens only a few inches, or the opener strains and stops. On a torsion spring above the door you can often see a gap in the coils. See spring replacement.
Can I still open the door with a broken spring?
Please don’t. Without the spring, the door’s full weight lands on the opener and on whoever is lifting it. Leave it closed and call us; if your car is stuck inside, we can usually get it out on the same visit.
